Press Release on virtual signing ceremony of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Partnership between Wikimedia Foundation and BeED

26th July 2021 – The Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit that operates Wikipedia, and Beeducation Adventures Sdn Bhd have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at a virtual ceremony to integrate Wikipedia Preview into the BeED Learning Management System.

Wikipedia, the world’s encyclopedia, lives up to its name by boasting a whopping 55 million articles in 300 different languages, accessed by 1.4 billion unique devices every month.[1] Launched in 2001, this online behemoth has received numerous accolades, including being one of the world’s most popular websites[2] and the 2015 recipient of the Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation, aimed at “encouraging and promoting scientific, cultural and humanistic values that form part of mankind’s universal heritage”.[3]

BeED is thus proud to announce its official collaboration with the Wikimedia Foundation by introducing the Wikipedia Preview feature into the BeED LMS. Through Wikipedia Preview, educators and learners alike can now explore snippets of Wikipedia directly in their lessons. Users will have a smoother and more contextual teaching and learning experience, all without having to navigate away from the BeED platform.

The successful integration of Wikipedia Preview into the BeED LMS serves as the first step towards a long and collaborative partnership between BeED and the Wikimedia Foundation, who both share core beliefs of educational equity as shown through their vision and mission statements:

Wikimedia Foundation’s Mission:

“The mission of the Wikimedia Foundation is to empower and engage people around the world to collect and develop educational content under a free license or the public domain, and to disseminate it effectively and globally”.

BeED’s Mission and Vision:

“We believe in a world where education is not limited by physical boundaries but by our desire to learn. We aim to give back to the world we live in by supporting schools and empowering people with opportunities to improve themselves and their quality of life through the power of education”.

BeED hopes to continue its vision of giving back to poorer communities by providing greater access to education.

The MOU virtual ceremony was signed and witnessed by SAKTI HENDRA PRAMUDYA, Senior Partnership Manager, SEA at Wikimedia Foundation and JIMMY KOAY, Co-Founder and Managing Director of BeED.
